Instantly recognisable in her pointy specs, Sarah McIntyre writes and illustrates the Grumpycorn picture books, as well as Dinosaur Firefighters and The New Neighbours. Her co-author collaborations with Philip Reeve include Oliver and the Seawigs and Pugs of the Frozen North, and they’ve had a lot of fun creating their new four-book series about Kevin the Roly-Poly Flying Pony. Sarah loves drawing and creating characters that make her laugh out loud.

Q: What book changed your life?

A book called Fever Crumb changed my life, because while I was at the Edinburgh Book Festival in 2010, I met Philip Reeve and we swapped books: I gave him my comic book Vern and Lettuce, and he gave me Fever Crumb, the first book in the Mortal Engines prequels. It was brilliant, I went on to read his other books, and thought, this guy can really write! I thought it would be amazing to work with him on creating more stories, and that’s exactly what happened. Now we have lots of books together! There’s a new edition of the Fever Crumb prequels with covers by concept artist Ian McQue, who also happens to be based in Edinburgh.
