The Bookery Supports Local Prison Libraries

Andy Aitchison

Recently, as part of our drive to encourage reading within all parts of our surrounding community, The Bookery donated a large number of new books through The Shannon Trust to prison libraries at HMP Channings Wood and HMP Exeter. The books were from a variety of genres and were suitable for people with a wide range of reading abilities.

Debbie, Library Manager at HMP Exeter said, “the prisoners are delighted to receive such a wide variety of fiction and non-fiction. The books are a great addition to our stock and have been chosen with care and consideration for the men.”

Verity, Regional Manager from Shannon Trust said “It was wonderful to help facilitate this donation from The Bookery. Prison libraries are such an important part of day-to-day prison life and have a huge impact by supporting people who want to learn new skills and make changes to their life when they are released. People can come to learn about new subjects and to find new interests within the books that they read.”.

Amanda, Library Manager at HMP Channings Wood said “it was a lovely selection of books and we are so grateful.”.

This donation will be so well used and having a really wide selection of interesting books encourages people to read for pleasure whilst in prison.
