Based on a true story from the wildest and most remote of the Scottish Isles and on events which took place nearly 300 years ago, Geraldine McCaughrean brings to life the characters from a very alien time and place so wonderfully that we instantly empathise and become engrossed in their ordeal.
A party of nine boys and three men is set ashore on an isolated rock stack half a day’s sea crossing from St Kilda. They are to collect the seabirds and eggs for the annual harvest which is essential for the islanders’ survival. But the boat for their return home never comes. As the weeks and months go by somehow the party survive, showing incredible fortitude but accidents, betrayal and the terrifying weather make it the most traumatic ordeal. Eventually a boat arrives but why did no-one from St Kilda rescue them? How will the boys be affected after they return home? Where the World Ends is a tragic but beautiful and original novel from a brilliant storyteller – it will move you deeply.
