A remarkable portrait of this unique archipelago, its amazing natural history, its rich culture and mix of modern and traditional society.
Tim Ecott first visited the Faroes 10 years ago and was captivated by the landscape, people and wildlife. He returned many times forging lasting relationships with farmers, fishermen, environmentalists and historians who have shared their knowledge and invited him to experience life on the islands, participating in the hunting, harvesting and celebrations, giving him a true insight and appreciation of their culture.
Following the seasons, Ecott explores the 18 islands to discover their individual characteristics. Writing vividly of the wild weather, dramatic landscape and amazing birdlife his love of the Faroes glows from his descriptions and his retelling of the history and rich folklore deepens the reader’s understanding and appreciation.
It’s a way of life unlike anywhere else in Western Europe, where vibrant traditions going back hundreds of years co-exist with modern technology and services and people are very close to nature, accepting the power of the elements to influence their lives.
The Land of Maybe is a sympathetic and challenging exploration of a very special place and its people and a compelling portrait of the dramatic landscape and its rich fauna – a powerfully evocative book.
