Description
A short history of the Custom House and the Quay in Exeter.
Exeter’s quayside preserves a fine series of historic buildings which reflect the city’s former importance as one of England’s leading ports. The centrepiece of the group is the Custom House, built in 1680-1, often regarded as the oldest Custom House in Britain. It formed part of a newly remodelled quayside; the long warehouse known as Quay House (now housing the Quay House Interpretation Centre), was constructed at the same time, and is also a building of great historic importance. Other buildings on the quay reflect the operation of the Georgian and Victorian port.
