A collection of 261 photographs many not seen since they appeared in the newspapers during the war years. Taken from two of Devon’s newspapers the Western Morning News and the Express and Echo.

Many of the images taken from the original glass negatives. Each has a caption and the author provides an introduction and index. The forward is by Councillor Hazel Slack, Lord Mayor of Exeter.

A wide range of topics is covered particularly war work, women’s role in the war effort, home guard, evacuees especially from Bristol, shocking bomb damage, Polish and American servicemen, fund raising and parades.

It will be of great interest not only to those that lived through the times but those who now live or work in Exeter and those interested in family or social history.
