The week of 15th to 22nd June sees Crediton’s award-winning bookshop The Bookery celebrate Independent Bookshop Week (IBW) 2024.
IBW is a celebration of independent bookshops across the UK and Ireland, highlights the vital role they play in their communities, and encourages booklovers to shop locally and play a part in supporting the High Street. As a non-profit and community owned business, The Bookery’s mission is to create an inclusive environment for all and provide pioneering projects supporting literacy, well-being and access to cultural opportunities for all.
To thank those supporting The Bookery, the first 100 customers to buy a book from Saturday 15th June will receive a free £5 book token to spend.
There will be free children’s craft activities in the shop from 3.00 pm on Wednesday 19th June.
Also on Wednesday 19th June, we will be hosting a bookshop social evening as part of The Big Book Group from 7.00pm. This event takes place nationally in independent bookshops and aims to have as many readers across the country taking part as possible.
The Bookery has chosen The Golden Mole and Other Vanishing Treasure by Katherine Rundell, to discuss on the night. This brilliant writer was previously named author of the year at the British Book Awards, the first time in six years that a children’s writer has picked up the accolade. Now in this new adult book, longlisted for the Wainwright Prize for Nature Writing, she tells of the staggering lives and threats to some of the world’s most endangered animals, from the Devon coasts and woods to the African savannah.
Book group members attending the evening will get a discount off The Golden Mole, and will also be offered a discount on the other books on the Indie Book Awards shortlist too.
The Indie Book Awards are the only book awards curated and judged by independent booksellers. They showcase the best paperback books of the summer across four categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Children’s Fiction and Children’s Picture Books. The winners of the Awards will be announced on 20th June, will our chosen book The Golden Mole be one of them?
If you would like to attend on the night, whether you are a book club member or just curious, we would love to have you join us – please let the shop know here or call us on 01363 774740
