As part of Feminist Book Fortnight we are delighted to be hosting Dreadnought South West’s Rebellious Sounds Archive. Call into the bookshop to experience this inspiring installation during FBF22, 14th-28th May.

The Rebellious Sounds Archive project presented an opportunity to commemorate, consider, share the heritage of women since the Representation of the People Act of 1918, and to recognise how women’s suffrage has acted as inspiration for contemporary women’s activism.

Forty-eight oral histories were collected, covering themes including the setting up of a local Rape Crisis service, campaigning for greater recognition of Tourette’s Syndrome in adults, volunteering on a migrant relief ship in the Mediterranean, and setting up a theatre company to promote the visibility of BAME talent in the South West.

A touring exhibition space, known as the Listening Booth was built in February 2018 to house extracts from each of the stories collected, so that they could be shared far and wide. Designed by Stand + Stare and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Listening Booth shares stories of women and non-binary people’s activism from across the South West.

Over the course of 18 months, until July 2019 the Listening Booth toured to 18 locations – to find where it went click here.

Feminist Book Fortnight is a Five Leaves initiative, launched in 2018, when fifty independent bookshops and organisations set up talks, discussions, book launches, poetry readings and socials to celebrate feminist writing.
