Book group

Did you know there’s a CCB book group? We meet approximately every six to eight weeks on Mondays, at 7.30pm in the shop.

Rather than taking it in turns to choose the next title we usually base our choices around CCB events or national literary prizes. Last year we chose Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine from the Women’s Prize for Fiction longlist, and then challenged ourselves to read as many as we could from the shortlist – someone managed all six! We had our discussion a few days before the winner was announced and chose the book we thought deserved the prize; we’re glad to say the official judges agreed with us!

We’ve also read titles from the 2018 Wainwright Prize longlist (Raynor Winn, one of the longlisters, came to CCB in February to talk about The Salt Path), and this year’s Costa Book of the Year, The Cut Out Girl by Bart van Es.

Our inaugural book group read was Notes from an Exhibition by CCB patron Patrick Gale, and we’re delighted that Patrick is coming back to CCB on 20th June during Independent Bookshop Week to talk about his new novel Take Nothing With You.

The next book group meeting is on 29th April and we’ll be discussing The Seagull by Ann Cleeves, ahead of Ann holding her own book group on The Seagull at the shop on 12th June.

We’d love to see new faces at the book group so do come along to the next meeting, whether you’ve read the book or not! It’s a very informal group, we have wine and nibbles if we’re feeling organised, and the evening usually finishes with people prowling the shelves and recommending their favourite titles, old and new. If you’d like any more information contact [email protected].
