A Tribute to Frank Letch MBE: A Night of Remembrance and Celebration

Frank and Natalia Letch (1)

We were proud to begin our autumn programme of author and community events with a deeply moving tribute evening in honour of Frank Letch MBE—former Mayor of Crediton, tireless advocate for disability rights, and cherished member of our local community.

Organised in collaboration with Frank’s wife Natalia Letch, the evening brought together friends, family, and admirers to celebrate a life lived with extraordinary courage, humour, and compassion. Devon County Councillor Steve Keable, a close friend of Frank’s, joined Natalia in conversation, sharing memories and reflections that painted a vivid portrait of Frank’s remarkable journey.

Steve opened the evening by describing Frank’s extraordinary life, reminding us that Frank didn’t need arms to embrace life fully. His reach extended far beyond the physical—he had a gift for making people pay attention, turning what many saw as a limitation into a superpower. Steve spoke of Frank’s great sense of humour and his ability to inspire, guide, and support those around him. “Frank was living proof that adversity can become a gift to open people’s eyes,” Steve said, thanking him for all he had shared and taught.

Frank’s story is one of resilience and inspiration. Born without arms, he defied expectations at every turn—becoming a teacher, a linguist fluent in five languages, a community leader, and a passionate campaigner. His autobiography, Just In Case, offers a candid and uplifting account of his life, from his childhood in London to his years in Birmingham, North Wales, and finally Devon, where he served as Town Mayor and District Councillor.

Natalia read selected passages from Just In Case, her voice filled with pride and love, and shared personal memories that touched everyone present. She spoke of Frank’s dry wit as a teacher, gently reminding students who thought something was too difficult that they should think again. We also heard of the deep sadness Frank experienced when his first wife Helen—mother of their five children—passed away from breast cancer at a young age, leaving Frank with yet another challenge to embrace: raising their young family.

There were moments of deep emotion, especially when Natalia read a piece she had written in the days before Frank’s passing. Her words resonated with everyone present, and the warmth and appreciation from the audience was palpable. The evening concluded with an open sharing of memories, each one painting a vivid picture of a man who inspired, challenged, and uplifted those around him.

We are incredibly grateful to Natalia and Steve for creating such a heartfelt and memorable evening. It was a fitting tribute to a truly extraordinary man whose legacy will continue to inspire our community.

Copies of Just In Case are available at The Bookery for £10. If you missed the event, we warmly encourage you to pick up a copy and discover Frank’s story for yourself.
