At The Bookery, volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. Their energy, creativity and commitment enable us to deliver an extraordinary range of events, projects and community initiatives.
From welcoming customers in the bookshop to supporting our schools programme, from sharing stories with isolated readers to helping families discover the joy of books, our volunteers make a real difference every day.
Our retail volunteers play a vital role in creating the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes The Bookery special. They help customers find the perfect book, keep our shelves looking beautiful, and ensure the shop runs smoothly. Alongside them, others give their time to events, outreach projects and reading programmes, all united by a shared passion for books and community.
“Volunteers don’t get paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.”
We are deeply grateful for their time, skills and dedication. Quite simply, we couldn’t do what we do without them. If you’d like to learn more about volunteering with us, please get in touch.
What Our Volunteers Say
“I have been a volunteer at The Bookery for many years. I love literature and talking to people about books. I really enjoy helping to manage stock and serve customers in the bookshop. It is great to feel a valued member of the team.”
“Reading short stories in a care home is rewarding and enjoyable for us all.”
“I relish the opportunity to help schools select the very best books, so that children can have access to stories in which they can recognise themselves, escape into another world, and develop empathy by treading in someone else’s shoes.”
‘Sharing Stories, which I thought was so straightforward, develops and extends the horizons and capacities of a volunteer in often unanticipated ways as they seek to enhance their reader’s enjoyment of stories and the processes of sharing them’.
